Yale & Towne: New Forms
Style & Security
The Yale Lock Company had a long history of hiring and promoting the work of artists along with their engineers. The Yale Art Hardware group was established under Henry Robinson Towne in the 1880s.
The style of their security always set them apart, culminating in a remarkable collaboration with a number of modern artsist in the late 1950s who created "New Forms in Door Ornamentation" for a traveling museum exhibition that toured the country in the 1960s, eventually arriving at the 1964 World's Fair. The fate of the exhibit and much of the collection is now unknown, as a series of takeovers and mergers left Yale's corporate history in a scrapheap.
